BERLIN - Spiekermann - P98A
Whilst in Berlin me and 10 others were lucky enough to visit Studio P98a, a letterpress workshop studio founded by German designer Eric Spiekermann. The studio has some very unique equipment, it holds a Heidelberg cylinder press, which we saw a demonstration of whilst there, the machine is heavy duty and over complicated but it is a good fast way to print, giving clear and bold printouts. The studio has almost 1000 cases of the type both woodcut and foundry type, some of which were custom made by Spiekermann, who then makes posters with this type to great effect. Our hosts talked us through the history of the type and the machinery explaining how old each was and how Spiekermann acquired them all. The studio also held an impressive bookcase which contained numerous of type volumes showing typefaces and how to use them. I also had the chance to print something from myself, as they had set up some type we could print with whilst we were there, getting to keep these prints which read 'Design will save the world' a good thing to remember.
