BERLIN - Hamburger Bahnoff

HAMBURGER BAHNOFF

I was fortunate enough whilst in Berlin to visit the Bahnoff, which is a former rail station for trains running between the capital and the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Its station building houses the museum for contemporary art. The building itself is huge with a high ceiling, which is one of the only parts left which resembles the former train station while the rest is built like a 19th-century manor house, it has a brilliant architecture to it. The Bahnoff holds the work of a number of artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein,  Joseph Beuys and Keith Haring as well as works by contemporary artists. The main room in the Bahnoff holds the breadth of the work and all of the Warhol and Lichtenstein work which is one of the headline features of the gallery.  I found Warhols huge prints astounding such bold colours and imagery used, I have not used print enough in the second year and the prints I saw at this Gallery have inspired me to get back in the print room and experiment with screen printing and monoprint more in future briefs and for personal work too.

The museum also holds a great collection of books and artwork for purchase by contemporary artists, designers, illustrators and photographers, including work by designer Rost, his prints focus on urban landscapes of Berlin but printed in a traditional Japanese style. They have a huge selection of books printed in a number of different languages from around the world, some rare and limited print books were on sale.
