PPP SB2 - Screen print exhibition - Munro House

PLAY IT LOUD - GIG POSTER GOODNESS

I visited an exhibition of screen printed works by a Manchester based illustrator and designer. His work covers bands such as wu tang clan as well as music legend Lee Scratch Perry. All the screen prints burst with colour and detail, so much so for a screen print too. The use of colours on white space makes the screen prints bold and eye catching while the majority use a simple two or 3 colour print scheme, they are far from easy and the skill can clearly be seen in the prints. I want to explore these styles of typefaces used also, the majority of my own work utilises san-serif basic fonts and a very minimal effect, I want to experiment using these styles used in these prints, which are used brilliantly yet subtly.

PPP BB2 - Punk In Print Exhibition

Having bought Toby Mott's book Punk In Print, it has had a huge effect and influence on my second year studies. It has helped me in numerous projects, especially COP, exploring the punk style and its aspects. I have been experimenting with collage which is a huge aspect of the punk movement and the posters and books available to view in this book show great examples of it. I was lucky enough to be able to visit the exhibition of the original works held by Village Bookstore in Leeds, curated by the author Toby Mott himself. The pieces were the original ones from the late 70's early 80's and held some wear and tear of being 40 years old nearly, though this only added to the history and glamour of the movement the posters were showcasing, the disreguard for rules and the sometimes obscene, the posters held history and style which is not seen now. The exhibition was also a great reminder of the different forms punk took and how different years took on different forms of punk, the posters which are above are the most influential I saw and the best examples of punk in print which were at the exhibition. I had a chance to speak to Tony yet he was not up for conversation, and did not speak back to me.
